Did BoA Manage to Eat You Up?

We have heard of her plans to enter the American music industry. We have seen two teaser clips of her American debut song “Eat You Up”. Now as recently as yesterday, the full-length song plus 3 possible album pictures were uploaded onto a MySpace account. It doesn’t seem to be a leak seeing that SM Entertainment has made no noise about it. Testing the market?

Other than the somewhat questionable lyrics and her accent, it doesn’t sound like a bad song overall. But the million-dollar question here is, how does it help her to break out in the competitive American music industry where no Asian singer has done it before? Sincerely wish her all the best and lots of luck.

The Lyrics (credit to Mashimaro-san@Boajjang.com)

When I first saw you I knew nothing’s like it used to be
Boy you have got to be the finest thing in history
The way I feel inside is just so hard to understand
You feed my appetite in ways I can’t explain

I’ll eat you up
(Your love, your love ~)
I’ll eat you up
(Your love, your love ~)

Ohoh Ohoh
(I’ll eat you up)
Ohoh Ohoh
(So yum yum)
Ohoh Ohoh
(Can’t get enough)
Ohoh Ohoh Oh Oh
(I think I’m in love)

If you move any closer boy there is no guarantee
What I will do to you I feel it and it’s scaring me
Like I’ve become some kind of demon in the night
You look so tasty I could eat you up alive

I’ll eat you up
(Your love, your love ~)
I’ll eat you up
(Your love, your love ~)

Ohoh Ohoh
(I’ll eat you up)
Ohoh Ohoh
(So yum yum)
Ohoh Ohoh
(Can’t get enough)
Ohoh Ohoh Oh Oh
(I think I’m in love)

I’ll eat you up
(Your love, your love ~)
I’ll eat you up
(Your love, your love ~)

Ohoh Ohoh
(I’ll eat you up)
Ohoh Ohoh
(So yum yum)
Ohoh Ohoh
(Can’t get enough)
Ohoh Ohoh Oh Oh
(I think I’m in love)

I can’t stop thinking about the things I wanna do to you
If you move any closer, you’d be asking for it too
I want your love, I need your touch
So much, I think I’m in love

I’ll eat you up
(Your love, your love ~)

Ohoh Ohoh
(I’ll eat you up)
Ohoh Ohoh
(So yum yum)
Ohoh Ohoh
(Can’t get enough)
Ohoh Ohoh Oh Oh
(I think I’m in love)

I wanna take you to my room

I wanna take you to my room

Ohoh Ohoh
(I’ll eat you up)
Ohoh Ohoh
(So yum yum)
Ohoh Ohoh
(Can’t get enough)
Ohoh Ohoh Oh Oh
(I think I’m in love)

I’ll eat you up . . .

I’ll eat you up . . .

I’ll eat you up . . .

  1. I really, really, really wish her the best of luck! We’ll see how the American market reacts though (if it will even react…)

  2. I love it. Yeah, slight accent and robotic pronunciation. But I really like the song. I really hope SM doesn’t waste 3 years on nothing! Best of luck to her!

  3. sounds like britney spears….maybe a different song to debut… the accent is fine! they love accents here…it’s adorable

  4. The song isn’t impressive or her English, but it’s a good listen. I don’t see this as an instant hit for her.

  5. i like se7en’s song better, them girls. even though i hate the lyrics, the melody is catchier than boa’s eat you up.

  6. I can’t judge it because it seems to be in mono rather than stereo. My subwoofer did nothing =/ bad quality doesn’t help haha.

  7. good beats but the lyrics are TERRIBLE. it’s like a lindsay lohan/ paris hilton song. on the plus side, she’s quite a looker

  8. Alright, listened to the mp3. Catchy beats. Terrible lyrics. But hey, lots of songs in the american industry has crappy lyrics. Its nothing special though..

  9. i think BoA does have what it takes to make it into the american music industry,
but i just don’t like the song :/ it’s way too seductive/dirty and that’s the image she’s going to be giving off.

  10. She’s not ready yet to break in to the American music.
The video, it doesn’t appease to American taste.
Utada Hikaru tried, and she failed.
Plus, the song isn’t even good.
She need to go for another image….and a different song.

  11. Those photos were good. She looks awesome in those. Eventhough im not a total fan of BoA, i prefer her to stay in Asia. I’m a bit disappointed with Bi and Se7en’s debut in USA.. (oh. well, not for se7en yet.) It’s better for them to stay in Asia.. besides, BoA is already popular across the world.. she doesnt need hollywood.

But if she continues with SM’s plan, I just wish her that Hollywood would lover her the way Asian Music lovers do. ^__^

  12. oh come on,i give her the benefit of a doubt to penetrate US market, with the accent like that? well try it once, why not? if she has a luck like charice pempengco have, well good for her….

  13. listening to the whole song sounds kinda crap. it was okay in the trailers. but like listening to the whole song wasnt very good….

  14. i dont like the lyrics as well.. and the repetitive Eat You Up is nice though.. thats all (;
i think the korean ver will sounds nicer in the full song

  15. They call her asian Britney Spears..and now that the real Britney is back why do they need her ?! she has to compete with her..come one -_-
I also think she totally has to break her clean image if she is going for the american market! and that’s a big risk for her.

  16. is that a low quality mp3??.. And did BoA sing “I wana take you into my room” twice during the end half?? OMG.. the lyrics is so inapproapriate.. *fainted* >.<

  17. I am from the UK, and here in the UK and USA it is difficult to be that successful in the market……sometimes Asia R & B music aren’t a big influence in America, possibly to the music style westerns like are different.
Not many artists like the UK can be successful in America, except recently Leona Lewis. The song is catchy, but i hope she will be successful, but the chances is slim……cas they need to match a similar style to what American artists are doing to be able to become successful and she will definantly need to have more promotions to be able to be recognised.

  18. ^ wow haters

    I just wish her luck
we need more asians trying to make it
we just need them to try again even if the “FAIL” their first try. Its more than obvious that these korean artists willl have a hard time…

  19. the song is okay but i dont think she’s going to do that great in the US. the cultures between US and Korea are totally different. i can see that she is trying to appeal to the US by changing her style of music but still it doesnt seem much of a hit

  20. Being from America, I can’t say it looks good for BoA. I think the girl is hot as heck, but Americans are going to be way critical. She’ll be lucky if she makes it on one radio station.

  21. no doubt she is gonna boom there since

there ARE alot of people who are into asian culture in america and BoA is one of the things asia can showcase

  22. that was such a big ol’FLOP waiting to happen.
The song was horrible & her voice so annoying.
Even with all the computer-generated stuff you can still hear her accent & her voice still sounds annoying.
I’m American & I can just tell right now she’s gonna flop with that single. Asian accent is not consider sexy or hot. It’s the truth. BoA just stay in Asia. Give your JumpingBoA something to cheer about & be happy after they were robbed for so long.

  23. I guess she’s still not ready for the US market. The song’s not as catchy and her accent and pronunciation were not there yet .. Maybe they can just use this single to test water .. Anyway, she still has a massive Asian market to fall back on .. I support BoA .. but not this song .. πŸ™‚

  24. seriously, i like se7en’s song better even though i don’t like the lyrics that much. my opinions for the artists that want to work in the american industry, don’t do it if unless you speak english fluetly, you’ll just embrass yourself.

  25. not fit for american market, im afraid to say. hope she does well anyway. i think a boyband would do better over here, considering how well tokio hotel did because of their huge fanbase. the fans are what matter, and boa isn’t as popular as others…

  26. @jay

tokio hotel dont speak fluent english, they have THICK german accent, but you can’t particularly tell when bill sings. its the way they sing, not talk. but you can notice boa’s flaws when she sings, unfortunately.

  27. She needs to work on her english… A LOT more.
And PETA’s gonna get her for wearing that fur… if it’s real lol.

  28. I don’t think its her best work and I don’t think it’ll get her into the American market. Aside from the catchy chorus, it’s just repetitive and not special. I guess they already leaked the good parts in the teasers already.

But we will see and I wish her the best of luck.

  29. …like Japan and China and the rest of Asia isn’t enough for SM!

…stop pushing your luck too far Lee Sooman, just give this girl a break…she’s been working hard but this just isn’t for her…she’s got fans worldwide willing to buy her albums (and it doesn’t have to be in English) so why embarass her with this crappy album?!

…I’ll just wish her good luck and lots of it because just working and trying hard won’t make it for her!

  30. coco lee had broken into the amercian market before and she was cool. but i don’t think Boa has what it take. her voice is too frail not powerful enough at least in this song. amercian idols’ runner-ups can do better!

  31. Though I like Se7en and Bigbang’s latest Englist singles, I have to say that Boa missed the mark in this song choice. The song is nice, sung well, but the lyrics are a bit choppy. She needs first rate lyricists to write her songs. This one sounds about like a high school freshman’s bad poetry. She needs to hook up with Bloodshy & Avant, Cathy Dennis, and Henrik Jonback for material that Grammy winning. (pst, they work with pop stars like Britney Spears)

  32. like what many of you said, it’s a catchy beat but the lyrics are horrible. honestly, i think her vocals aren’t strong enough for my taste. she sound’s like a little girl in this song. i prefer to listen to someone like Gummy or Younha. correct me if i’m wrong but even Rain had a shot here in the states but didn’t really make a big name for himself and Rain’s pretty talented.

  33. american economy isn’t too great….will people want to spend money on her? and with more familiar and popular artists also releasing new music in the US…hm…

    her accent….dude…..

there are better english-singing korean songs out there than this one that would do much better in the US

listening to the song for the first time…well, the lyrics were kind of funny and i almost laughed out loud several times (especially at the ‘yum yum’ part). this whole cannibal theme is a bit too funny even though it tries to be sexy.

if an american unfamiliar to this artist listen to it, they might be reminded of the eccentric stereotypical japanese hyper-type-of-music…that…uh…the japanese are stereotpyically known for. good or bad?

and the lyrics. it’s like walking into an asian-american market and reading at the bad translations on the products. well, some of the lyrics seem like that. maybe it’s normal in pop music, but her asian accent just brings that sentiment to the surface.

  34. As much as I dislike Boa’s voice, as a fellow Asian, I would like to wish her luck as well. She’ll need lots of it even get noticed in this tough “Hollywood” industry.

Asian’s smell failure before it arrives and we (in general) are always quick to judge.

It’s not even about her accent. I do not like the song and I certainly do not find any part of it appealing. I do not like the way she sings it. Her voice is irritable and robotic in this song.

It sounds like a reject pepsi commerical song.

  35. bleh, she’s a terrible singer. and all she talks with hesitation after each word. Makes her sound like.. she’s retarded or robotic 😑

  36. plus she’s supporting the submissive asian girl stereotype. it’s really no wonder there’s a clone of her doing porn.

  37. @43, ROFL, SRSLY? 😐

Aaah, BoA’s dumb, she should have a KOREAN comeback before running away to the states T___T.

  38. is she wearing a dog collar?? oO
    what is that???
going for a kinky look or something?

and i am not digging the song…the…its too mediocre…she needs something that will help her stand out

  39. a majority of her fans (ie. Soompi & Boajjang) seem to be supportive of her lyrics about oral sex. .. but still like to put other artists down -_-

  40. her voice is fine. the lyrics are horrible and her tone sometimes makes it sound really awkward. the chorus is better i guess. the lyrics are actually written in the taste of most of the american songs these days. i wouldve liked the song better if some of the lyrics were changed. the music isnt bad but the lyrics are horrible. her pictures are beautiful. its seriously an alright song for her but if it gets enough airtime on the radio and enough hype it can be a hit in america. the accent is alright because people are still able to understand what she s saying. many people in american entertainment industry has an accent.

  41. i dont think its that bad
the lyrics are kinda of blahhhh…..
    but then again
seriously like cranck that wasnt much better
    and that was a hit
i dont think she’ll do fantastic with this album
itll appeal a lot to the korean americans
but what they are aiming for is full/all american
    and
    it will take much more
    bettter songs and better lyrics
    def.
    lolz
but i think that boa and sm have wut it takes
def. no that if boa and sm cant do it
seven and yg wont be able too
but lim hunghee might with the help of jyp
    anyways
    best of luck to boa!

  42. Her voice does not work with the song… I sounds like a little’s girl’s voice singing about inappropriate things… I wish her best of luck though!

  43. i couldn’t stand to listen to the whole song…it’s all digital no? i’m all for koreans entering the american market but it’s got to be better than this.

  44. what..a…HORRIBLE…song!!! i’m all for asian artists succeeding in the US but please come up with something better than this piece of sh*t!

  45. The previews made the song sound hella hot, but after listening to the full song I cannot feel this song at all. Totally disappointed with the song, but with how she’s saying the lyrics makes me cringe :X It’s like a period after every single friggin’ word which is totally annoying.
Wish her the best, but I’m rooting for Se7en over her.

  48. Why? Are people being so critical about Utada Hikaru,I mean she was rarely promoted, but in Boa’s case,I think it’s safe to say her team will try to promote REALLY BIG. Seriously people Hikaru did not really fail,I mean if your gonna say she failed please state how!

  49. It’s really catchy. But on the downside…there’s not a whole lot of actual singing in there and it sounds really robotic. Depending on the mood of America, she’ll make it or break it.

  50. mmm ya not a bad song.. but not good enough tp break into the u.s. definitely stay in asia.. and roll around in the success she has there.. no offense, i like boa and all, but how could you even think of breaking into the u.s with an accent? sean kington’s a different story hhahhha.

  51. Pingback: BoA’s Eat You Up leaked on MySpace | YeinJee's Asian News

  52. Aigoo !! No comments on the song =/
I think she could have done better than this if she took a little more time to practice(?)
    Disappointing !
I’m highly anticipating Se7en’s breakthrough though.
    Anyways, Boa Hwaiting !

  53. I actually like the beat of the song and it’s something you can really dance too. Her English needs a little bit of cleaning up though. Like I said before they should start her out small like movie roles, commercials, whatever they can give her THEN try to rise to music. Either way, best of luck BoA! ❀

  54. i say this could be a hit in asia, but for the american market there is no question she’ll be overlooked due to the slight accent she holds. Its sad to say but this isn’t the right time nor is it the right song to break into the american industry with.

I know boa can do much much better, and i’m sure when that happens it’ll actual be a mind blowing song that cannot be overlooked by anyone

  55. I think most people would make fun of her accent more than listen to her and take her seriously.

Just an opinion. The video teaser wasn’t that great either.

  56. .. good luck
its kinda hard to hear wat shes saying sometimes, she sounds a bit TOOO asian 😦 yea.. i think she would be made fun of more than appreciated

  57. I can still hear the type of Asian impression
but honestly I REALLY like the song =)
    though SM needs to promote!
I know that BoA can do well in America!

  58. preview made me anticipate it so much.
but after hearing the full song, I must say I’m disappointed.
*sigh* I hate when the preview sounds better than the actual song.

  59. The song is pretty lame.
It sounds really dirty and the whole song is “I’ll eat you up”
BoA needs to expand her English vocab.

  60. though i wish she does well, i really dont like the song.
not bc of the sexiness but bc there’s barely any lyrics.

the reason why most of us respect her is bc of her vocal abilities, and she’s entering the american industry with a song that’s not representing the BoA that we feel proud to support…….

there have been many song that i’ve introduced to friends who are not into asian culture, and THIS SONG is definetely not one of them

    Pao

  61. I’ve been a huge fan of BoA since her No.1 days. Unfortunately i really can’t say i love the song. i liked her hip hop dance style and clothes in the music video but i cannot picture any dude pumping out “Eat you up” while driving down the street. I can’t picture this being played in clubs with people trying to groove/grind to it either. Her pronounciation is just… not good enough. i hate the robotic feel of the words and… Yum Yum?… i think she may end up promoting this in Asia more than the U.S.

  62. I don’t like the words “I’ll Eat You Up”. That phrase alone just sounds really lame. T_T

On top of that the lyrics are so redundant and juvenile. I mean, more than half the song is “whoa ooh oh oh / yum yum”

  63. after listening to Big Bang’s ‘Number 1’ (which by the way is in English intended for the Japanese market) this is pretty bad and she wants to enter into the American market with that??? – i think Big Bang has a better chance with ‘Number 1’ – its HOTTTTTTTT

ps. nothing against BoA, im sure she’s awesome (altho i’ve never heard her music, i’ll give her the benefit of the doubt) but this is about getting into the American mainstream – with people like Neyo and Timabland..she stands no chance with that song

  64. πŸ˜„ i can’t imagine normal American ppl singing along with the lyrics..haha..it’s just they take it as a blow job..LMAO
i wonder really who wrote that and well as everyone said we all can hear her accent! i’m seriously wondering how is it gonna turn out O.o

  65. am feeling so hungry currently.
not wanting to be eaten up just yet.
rather than that, i will definitely agree to the idea of eating her up, instead.
    *haha*

  66. The beat is really nice and catchy. The lyrics itself is truly horrible. And I think that it should be something more meaningful, not like this. Same for Se7en’s song too.

  67. Don’t really sound like her… and there are like delays in her pronounciation… must be the language problem… and it sounds so darned Britney… I’m just dying to see the MV… is she gonna be a vampire in it? Hehehe!

  68. No.

I don’t think she’ll do good. I mean, look at Bi, even he didn’t do as good in the market.

  69. The title alone is disgusting! There are enough trashy lyrics here in the US so if you are going to break into the music biz here from another country-can you at least bring some class!

  70. Sun Ho has hit the America industries already. as the first to really engage the america industries. Anyways, this song reminds me SOOO SOOO SOOO much of Britney.. But, BoA. hope she’ll be strong enough to bring on Hollywood. Go BoA!

  71. Idk, I kind of feel that the heavy beat is really overpowering. This is pretty common in the American theme, however, the difference is that the beat is much faster than what Boa has shown here. It kinda feels like she is forcing out the lyrics rather than singing it and the music only makes it that much worse. My opinion here (sorry to criticize so much after her first try) but, if the beat was a little faster, and not so um.. pounding? the feeling would be better. I also think that with a faster beat, it would hide her accent and forcefullness of the lyrics.

  72. um… other than the… “so yum yum” part, the lyrics arent that bad…
I like the music more though… its a nice song to dance to…
hope she does well~! wish her the best of luck!! πŸ™‚
