With KBS “Kingdom of the Winds” and MBC “Beethoven Virus” beginning their broadcast yesterday night, the burning question that most viewers are concerned with is who will end up as the king of the Wed-Thus timeslot.
“Kingdom of the Winds” decided to go ahead with their regular broadcast, ignoring the temptation to show the 2010 World Cup qualifier game between South and North Korea, achieving a good rating. According to AGB Nielsen, “Kingdom of the Winds” achieved 14% and was just 0.5 percentage points lower than SBS “Working Mom” which will be ending in two weeks time.
Netizens praised the drama for it’s dramatic and life-like war scenes but some felt that it was like a sequel to “Jumong”. The PD explained that both dramas can’t be compared and were different as “Jumong” was based on fantasy while “Kingdom of the Winds” will be following actual events in history.
MBC decided to air the 2010 World Cup qualifier (achieved 17.5%) and disrupt the original airing schedule for “Beethoven Virus” which was shown instead immediately after the match. But that didn’t have any effect on the ratings as it got an impressive 15.1%, no doubt aided by the fallout from the match.
Netizens commented that “Beethoven Virus” was an upbeat drama and was delighted to be able to listen to classical music being played in a drama. But others felt that the characters and the playing of the instruments was a mismatch and didn’t gel well. They could tell at one glance that they were not actually playing the instruments. Nevertheless, it was a passable debut.
So with both dramas getting to a good start rating-wise, the real battle starts tonight when they will go head-to-head in the same timeslot.
With “Painter of the Wind” starring Park Shin Yang and Moon Geun Young coming up in two weeks time on SBS, the battle for supremacy is expected to get even hotter. Viewers are really going to be spoilt for choice.
