Barely settled down watching the first game on offer today when Arsenal striker, Eduardo da Silva went down after a seemingly clumsy challenge on 3 minutes from Birmingham central defender, Martin Taylor.
But the scenes that followed was shocking as it was clear on everyone’s faces that it was a serious injury as some of them couldn’t even look at it. The television network couldn’t even show a replay of how the injury came about because it was too graphic. The game stopped for 8 minutes as Eduardo was given medical attention and then carried off the pitch with a oxygen mask on.
Arsenal officials has confirmed that Eduardo has broken the lower part of his left leg and will play no further part this season. Alan Smith of Newcastle United once suffered a similiar injury and was out for more than a year.
He had a slow start to his Arsenal career but got better as the season progressed and was a key player in the title challenge. He was also set to be a key man for Croatia at Euro 2008. Sadly for Arsenal and Croatia, they will have to do without him in the coming months. All the best and a speedy recovery!

I hope the FA has something to say about this, a 3 match ban for Taylor just doesn’t cut it, doesn’t even come close. It’s gonna be the guys birthday on Monday, some birthday he’s going to have. It is heartbreaking to see a beautiful young player cut down by such a stupid, brutal tackle. Eduardo is finished at the top level. Perhaps a midfielder or defender could come back from such an appalling injury, but I can’t see it happening in a striker, who must have skill, speed, shiftiness, power, and confidence.
The only thing Martin Taylor will ever be remembered for in football is that he destroyed the career of a footballer whose boots he would not have been worthy to carry.

This was an awful incident for both players involved, but lets get real, its early in the game a nimble forward v a much slower big centre half, seeing the whole sequence of events unfold at real speed (not super slow-mo or still picture) I have no doubt that taylors first thought was get the ball, he was wrong, beaten to the ball in a fraction of a second by a quicker player with horrific consquences, talyor unlike some players is not a player that delibrately goes around nobbling fellow pros. For wenger to call for a life ban is a complete yet understandable over reaction by a manager who has a fine reputation for raising young talent, but who also has a reputation for selective vision. Challanges meated out last week at man u could have had the same disasterious results for nani and had far more intent for injury but were defended by wenger as reaction to defeat?
In recent months there have been several players red carded for potentionally much more damaging ‘tackles’ there saving grace have been the player escaped injury. This is tragic for two professional footballers and will take a long time to heal for all concerned
